Here’s your chance to buy a brand new 3D TV at half its market value. Opportunity knocks at customer’s doors with some retailers willing to sell off major brands of TV sets at half the market price. Discounts being offered are as high as 50 percent to customers.

According to information made available to Emirates 247, several major television brands, including Panasonic, Samsung and LG, have told retailers to sell 2011 models that have been used as display units at 50 per cent discount.

What this means is that an LG LW6510 which is a 55 inch full HD LED 3D TV can now be purchased for just Dh4,499 as against original retail value of Dh8,999. The same is the case of the 55 inch full HD capable LED 3D TV from LG (model LW6510) whose original cost was Dh8,999 is now available for Dh 4,499.

Similarly the Panasonic ST30, the 50 inch Plasma 3D TV originally priced at Dh5,999, can be obtained for Dh2,999.

For a Panasonic ST30 which is a 50 inch Plasma technology based set the price is Dh 2,999 as against its original price of Dh 5,999.

However, retail stores maintained that the final decision to extend the same offer to retail customers would be made by store managers.

“Not all stores are extending the same offer to customers, despite instructions from principles. The maximum discounts being offered are up to 30 per cent,” said a merchandiser at Sharaf DG.

June and July are the months of higher sales in the region. He said “That’s the time when the best offers are available on old discontinued models.”

On the LG2011 model a merchant at the retail shop said “The main attraction of the TV is its very high contrast, flicker-free 3D quality and the fact that you do not need battery-operated 3D glasses.”

The 3D price war thus wages on amongst 3D TV makers and the end result would surely be a fall in prices by the end of 2012.

LG electronics who sell their 3D products in the UAE region in the price range of $1000 to $5000 have estimated prices to come down by 10 to 20 percent this year. They attribute this drop in price to the progressing technology.

President of LG electronics in the Gulf region, Duk Young Kim, said during the launch of LG’s 2012 Cinema 3D Smart TV that the company went about adding features to the TV set to keep the price at level. The 2012 Cinema 3D Smart TV has a 2d to 3D convertor and has a price tag of Dh 15,000. With the new feature that the company has added to their present line up of smart 3D TV sets, one would be able to adjust the depth as also the distance between objects as per individual taste and liking. One can also connect ones PC to the TV set using the onboard wireless connectivity feature. LG is claiming to have under its control a 40 percent market share in the UAE.

As per estimates of the Product Manager / TV Division of LG Electronics, James Kim, there is a jump that is going to take place in the 3D sector from five percent which was the sales in the first quarter of 2011 to 20 percent by this year end. He estimates sale of 200,000 units in this year.

LG has also allayed fears of Toshiba coming out with their glasses free 3D set would cause them any alarm. They were confident of remaining ahead in the race as per their Marketing President.

Quoting Duk Young Kim, “I cannot say the right time, but we are on the way of introducing 3D TVs without glasses.”

HDMI: Gone are the days or S-video or composite video cables. In are HDMI or Ethernet. That’s probably all you need these days to hook up your 3D TV. HDMI will be the preferred choice from an HD Blu Ray player or a cable or satellite box with 3D capability. The cable can also carry non HD channels so dont worry about that. Ethernet: The other cable you may need if you want to access the 3D TVs Internet capabilities is a Cat 5 or 6 Ethernet cable to connect to a computer or router. You’ll probably need extended lengths of ethernet cable to run between your TV and router, these custom lengths can be cut for you at most computer stores.

Component: In the event you have an older DVD player and do not plan to upgrade to a Blu Ray, a component RGB 3 cable combo might be necessary to deliver a good 480p picture. This cable might also be used if your cable or satellite box is not HD compatible.

Google spokesperson mentioned the ability of its users to become their own 3D filmmakers now. In the words of YouTube spokesperson Matt McLernon, “In the same way we made editing features available. We want a way to give editors and users more tools.”

The technology that Google has used for this conversion is to take the data that is held in a monoscopic video, such as color, the spatial layout and motion. From this data an algorithm helps build a depth map of the content. This is further mixed with the original frame of the video and the left and right eye image is created. For viewers though, the task is only to click the 3D version button to see the magic work for them.

The LA times however writes that the effect created on the screen could end up with the viewer going cross eyed. This is so, for no user would have 3D viewing glasses in their office space.

The Google site however also gives the option for viewing the 3D converted image without glasses. One of them is viewing it cross eyes which the LA times commented upon. The other options are parallel and mirror split options.

For those who have 3D viewing glasses of different make and variety, once again the site offers many fine tuning options which need to be tried out for best effects. For those who wish to convert their own self created video content to 3D, the option is the same. They have to upload the video to the Google site and hit the convert to 3D button. Rest would be done by the Google site and software. For content that has been shot in 3D format itself originally, there is no need to covert to 2D and then uploading. One can directly upload to YouTube.

As per McLernon the best experience of watching YouTube with this Magic 3D conversion feature is on the desktops. YouTube as of now is the leader of HD content so far as video content goes on the net, now they would claim the same for 3D also.
